Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across California

One Cold Element on an Electric Cooktop

If one burner on your electric cooktop stays cold, the fault is almost always in that burner's own coil, receptacle, or switch, and it's a repairable fix. Maybe you turn the knob, the light comes on, and nothing happens. Maybe the element glows for a minute, then quits halfway through dinner while the other three cook fine. That mix of symptoms narrows down where the problem lives. Here's how we trace it and what you can safely check yourself first.

What a dead element is really telling you

An electric cooktop burner needs power coming in, a switch or control telling it to heat, and a heating element that isn't broken. When one burner fails and the rest cook normally, whole-house power is fine. The fault sits in that burner's own path. When every burner is dead but the clock and lights still work, we start thinking about one leg of the 240-volt supply, either a tripped double breaker or a loose connection at the range. Glass-top units add another layer. The element may be fine while a burned control board or a failed relay keeps it from turning on.
Note which pattern matches your cooktop. It saves diagnostic time.

The cheap causes we rule out first

Coil-style cooktops use plug-in elements. The coil ends sit in a receptacle, and those contacts corrode or burn. A loose coil can arc, pit the terminals, and quit heating. Reseating the coil sometimes brings it right back. Next is the infinite switch, the knob control that cycles power on and off. If a burner runs full blast with no low setting, or only works when you jiggle the knob, that switch is the usual suspect. Then there's the element itself. Coils break internally and glass-top radiant elements develop open circuits. On smooth tops, a blistered or cracked spot under the glass is a strong hint.

Safe checks you can do right now

Turn the cooktop off and let everything cool completely. On a coil unit, unplug the suspect coil and look at the metal ends. Black, pitted, or melted means trouble. Swap that coil into a burner you know works. If it heats, the coil is fine and the receptacle or switch is at fault. If it stays cold, the coil is done.
Check your breaker panel. Electric cooktops use a double-width breaker, so flip it fully off, then back on.
Look under the pot for a warped bottom that doesn't sit flat on the glass. Stop there. Do not remove the cooktop, unscrew panels, or probe wiring.

What we do differently on a service call

We pull power at the breaker, then put a meter on the element and read its resistance. A good radiant element shows a specific ohm value. An open circuit reads infinite. That one test separates a bad element from a bad control in about a minute.
From there we check the infinite switch for continuity through its cycle, inspect terminal blocks for heat damage, and read voltage at the supply to confirm both legs are live. On glass tops with touch controls, we test the control board's output to the relay. Then we look for why it failed in the first place: a scorched receptacle, a loose crimp, moisture from a boilover.

California quirks worth knowing

Hard water shows up here more than people expect. Boilovers from mineral-heavy water leave crusty deposits that creep into coil receptacles and under smooth-top trim. That residue holds moisture and corrodes contacts. Wipe spills once the surface cools instead of letting them bake on.
Summer heat matters too. In a hot Central Valley kitchen, a cooktop's internal parts run warmer, and marginal connections fail sooner. If your burner works in the morning and quits at dinnertime, thermal expansion at a loose terminal is a real possibility.
Bring us the details: which burner, what setting, how long before it quits. Call us and we'll sort it out.

One Cold Element on an Electric Cooktop — fast answers

Why does my burner heat, then shut off after a few minutes?

Usually the infinite switch is cycling wrong, or a limit sensor on a glass top is reacting to heat buildup. Warped cookware that traps heat can trigger it too. Either way, it needs testing under load.

Can I just replace the coil element myself?

On a plug-in coil cooktop, yes. Coils unplug and swap without tools. But if the new coil also stays cold, the receptacle or switch is the problem, and that's inside the unit. Stop there.

All four burners are dead but the display works. What happened?

The display often runs on 120 volts while the elements need 240. Lose one leg of power and the burners quit while the clock stays lit. Check for a tripped double breaker first.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form, then describe what you hear, smell or see. Odd noise, standing water, no heat. Have the model number handy if you can reach it.

  2. Step 2

    We schedule a visit

Pick a window that fits your day. We confirm the address and ask a few questions first so the van carries parts that commonly fail on your machine.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose and repair

Our technician tests the machine, explains what failed and lays out your repair options. Many jobs finish the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule the return before we leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Hard water knowledgeSacramento Valley minerals scale up heating elements, valves and spray arms. We look for buildup, not just broken parts. Clearing scale and swapping clogged components keeps a dishwasher or washer from failing the same way again.
  • Heat pump dryersNewer heat pump dryers dry differently, and they fail differently. Clogged condensers, blocked drains, long cycle times, all of it has a cause. We service these units and vented models too, and we tell you what the machine needs.
  • Statewide coverageWe are based in North Highlands and work across California. Coastal humidity, valley heat and desert dust each stress appliances in their own way, so we factor local conditions into the diagnosis instead of guessing.
  • Straight answersSome machines are worth repairing and some are not. We tell you which, based on the failed part, the age of the unit and what else is likely to go next. Then you decide.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
  • Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
