What the symptom is telling you
A gas burner needs gas at the port and a spark at the same moment, with a clean path for both. Take away either and you get no flame. Pay attention to which part is missing. Clicking with no flame usually means the spark works but gas isn't reaching the igniter, often from a clogged port. No clicking at all points toward the ignition side, a switch, or power. Clicking on every burner when you only turned one knob is its own clue. Note what you hear and smell before you touch anything. That detail saves time on the phone with us.
Cause one: a dirty or wet burner cap
Start here. It's the most common thing we find and it costs nothing to rule out. Boilovers dump sugar, starch, and grease into the tiny gas ports around the burner head. In much of California we also deal with hard water, so a pot that boils dry leaves a chalky mineral crust behind. That crust blocks the port nearest the igniter, and the spark fires into empty air. A cap knocked crooked during cleaning does the same thing. Caps sit in one orientation only. Off by a few degrees and the flame path never lines up with the spark gap.
Cause two: moisture, then the ignition parts
After a big cleaning or a spill, water gets under the igniter and every burner clicks at once, nonstop. That usually dries out in a day or two. Leave the cooktop uncovered and give it time. If clicking continues past that, the igniter electrode or its ceramic body may be cracked, or the switch inside the knob stem is sticking. Those are inside the appliance and not a homeowner job. Same goes for a spark module that fires weakly or not at all. On sealed burner ranges, a bad valve or a plugged orifice also shows up as spark with no flame on one burner only.
Safe checks you can do right now
Turn the burner off and let everything cool. Lift the grate and the burner cap. Wipe the cap and the burner head with a damp cloth, then dry them completely. Clear the small holes with a straightened paperclip or a toothpick. Never use a drill bit or wire that could widen them. Set the cap back flat and level. Confirm the other burners and the oven still work, which tells us whether gas is reaching the range at all. Check that the range is plugged in, since the spark needs electricity. If you smell gas, stop, shut the burner off, open a window, and call us.

For a short-term meal, many ranges allow it once the spark side is off. Keep your face back and light the match first, then turn the knob. If gas doesn't ignite in a few seconds, shut it off and ventilate.
Why do all my burners click when I turn on just one?
Usually moisture under the cooktop after a spill or cleaning. Let it dry a day or two with the caps off. If it keeps clicking, a switch or the spark module is likely stuck sending signal.
Can a clogged burner cause a yellow flame instead of no flame?
Yes. Partial blockage or a misaligned cap starves the flame of air, so you get orange or yellow tips and soot on your pans. Clean the cap and reseat it. If the color stays off, have it looked at.
