What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
Your microwave has two separate jobs. One set of parts makes the display light up, the tray turn, and the fan blow. Another set makes the actual cooking energy. When the first group works and food stays cold, the cooking side has stopped. That is helpful information. It means the control board is at least partly alive and the door switches are letting the cycle start. Test it honestly first. Put one cup of tap water in a glass measuring cup, run it two minutes, then carefully touch the cup. Cool water confirms no heat. Warm water means you may just have a slow, aging unit.
The cheap causes we check first
Door switches are the usual suspects. Most microwaves have three of them stacked in the latch area, and if one goes bad in the wrong way, the unit runs the fan and light but refuses to send power to the cooking circuit. Worn latch plastic does the same thing, especially in kitchens where the door gets slammed. Next up is the thermal cutout. It trips when the vents get blocked by grease film, or when the unit was run near an empty cavity. Both of these are small, common parts. Neither one means replacing the whole appliance.
The bigger cause families
If switches and cutouts are fine, we look at the high-voltage group: the magnetron, the diode, and the transformer. Those make the energy that heats food. A failed diode often trips your breaker or makes a loud buzz. A tired magnetron may heat weakly at first, then not at all. In hot Central Valley kitchens and garages, heat-stressed units fail here sooner. Last is the control board. Boards fail less often than people think, but relay contacts on them do burn. Age and how the unit is vented usually tell us which family to suspect before we open anything.
Safe checks you can do right now
Unplug the unit before touching anything. Wipe the door edge and latch area clean, since grease buildup keeps doors from seating. Close the door and listen for a firm click. Look at the vent openings on the back or top and clear the dust. Check that the outlet works by plugging in a lamp, and try a different circuit if the microwave shares one with a toaster or fridge. Do not remove any panel or cover. The capacitor inside holds a serious charge even when unplugged, and it holds it for a long time. That part is not a homeowner job, ever.
