Age matters, but the cutout matters more
A built-in under about eight years old is usually worth repairing. Parts still flow, and the cabinet opening was cut for that exact model. Swap it out and the new unit may sit a half-inch off, which means trim kits or a trip to a cabinet shop. Over-the-range units are a little easier since sizes are more standard, though venting and mounting plates still differ. Countertop microwaves are a different story. Those are simple boxes and rarely worth a service call. With anything built in or trimmed, the install cost plus cabinet work pushes the math toward repair more often than people expect.
What broke tells you most of the story
Some faults are straightforward. A dead touchpad, a failed door switch, a burned-out turntable motor, a broken hinge, a bad control board: defined parts with defined jobs. No heat is the common complaint, and that's usually the magnetron or the high-voltage components. Real repair, and only a technician should be near those parts. Never open the case yourself. Microwaves store dangerous charge even unplugged. What tips toward replacement is a cracked cavity wall, rust burned through inside the oven, or arcing that has scorched the interior. Damage to the sealed cooking chamber isn't something we patch.
Can we still get the part?
Parts availability decides a lot of these calls. Control boards for discontinued models dry up first, and so do decorative door assemblies and specific trim pieces. When we can source a board or a switch from a supplier, the repair path is clean. When a board has been out of production for years and nobody stocks it, we say so plainly instead of chasing it for weeks. Sometimes there's a middle option, a good used or refurbished board, and we'll tell you when that's realistic. How we think it through on the visit
We start with what you saw and heard. Buzzing? Sparks? Did the light stay on while it stopped heating? Then we test the door switches, check power at the outlet, watch how the control panel responds, and inspect the cavity and waveguide cover. We also check whether the unit is tripping a breaker or GFCI. From there we can usually name the faulty part and tell you if it's available. Then we lay out the choice: repair this part, or plan a replacement and reuse the cutout as cleanly as we can. You decide. We don't push a repair we wouldn't do in our own kitchen.
When replacing honestly wins
Replacement makes sense when the cavity is rusted through or scorched, when two or more major assemblies fail at once, or when the part simply doesn't exist anymore. Kitchen heat is hard on these units. Over-the-range models sit right above burners and pull grease and steam through the filter for years. If yours is well past a decade, already had a board replaced, and now won't heat, we'll usually say buy new.
