What "not cooling" actually tells us
Two very different problems sound the same over the phone. In one, the fridge compartment is warm while the freezer stays frozen solid. That usually points to airflow, meaning cold air is being made but it isn't moving where it should. In the other, both sides are warm and the unit feels quiet, or oddly warm on the outside. That points to the sealed system or the compressor circuit. When you call, tell us which one you have and whether you hear a fan running. That one detail changes what we load on the truck.
Cheap causes first: air, dust, and door seals
Start with the boring stuff, because it's often the answer. Condenser coils packed with dust and pet hair can't shed heat, so the fridge runs and runs without getting cold. In Sacramento Valley summers, a garage fridge fighting 105-degree air struggles even when it's healthy. Overpacked shelves block the vents inside. A door gasket with a torn spot or a sticky film will leak warm room air in all night long. Check that nothing (a tall bottle, a cereal box) is wedged against the vent openings in the back wall of the fresh food side.
Defrost problems and frozen-over evaporators
This is the most common real failure we see on frost-free fridges. The evaporator coil behind the freezer wall is supposed to shed its ice a few times a day. When the defrost heater, thermostat, or control fails, ice builds into a solid block and the fan can't push air through it. The pattern: freezer still cold, fridge warming up, sometimes a buzzing or scraping fan noise. A telltale sign is that the fridge cools fine for a day after you unplug it and let it thaw, then quits again. That relapse is the diagnosis.
Safe checks you can do right now
Leave alone anything behind a screwed-on panel, and don't unplug something you're unsure about. Do this instead. Put a glass of water in the fridge and check it with a thermometer after four hours. Listen at the back for a hum, or dead silence. Feel the outside walls near the bottom, where some warmth is normal but scorching is not. Vacuum the exposed grille at the base or back. Verify the temperature dials weren't bumped by a kid or a grocery bag, and that the doors close on their own with the light going off. Write down what you found. It shortens our visit.

If you can see ice on the freezer's back wall, yes. Unplug it, move the food to a cooler, and let it thaw with the doors open. That confirms a defrost problem and gives us useful information.
Why is the freezer fine but the fridge warm?
Almost always airflow. Cold is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge. A blocked vent, an iced coil, or a dead evaporator fan cuts off that transfer while the freezer stays cold.
