What "no ice" is actually telling you
An ice maker needs cold, water, and a signal to cycle. Lose any one of those and the bin stays empty. The clues are in the details. A tray with a solid frozen slab means water came in but never released. Bone-dry molds mean water never arrived at all. Small hollow cubes point to low water pressure or a partly blocked line. Cloudy or slow-melting cubes usually mean mineral buildup, common on our water. Ice that smells like the freezer is an airflow and door seal problem, not an ice maker problem. Start with the cheap stuff: switches, doors, and a full freezer
Check the obvious things first, because they cost nothing. Many ice makers have an on/off switch or a wire arm that shuts the unit off when ice piles up. Bump the arm, no ice. Look in the fridge menu for a control that got toggled during cleaning. Then check the freezer temperature. Ice production needs roughly 0 to 5 degrees F, and warmer than that means cubes form slowly or not at all. A freezer stuffed to the door blocks the vent that feeds cold air to the ice compartment, so pull items away from the back wall. Last, confirm the water supply valve behind or under the fridge is fully open.
Water supply and filters: the most common real fault
Most no-ice calls come down to water not getting there. A clogged filter is the usual starting point. California hard water and sediment shorten filter life, so if yours is past six months, change it. Then check the small plastic line running to the fridge. A kink behind the unit after somebody pushed it back is very common. Freeze-ups happen too. The fill tube ices over, water backs up, and the maker keeps cycling dry. Some people find water pooling under the crisper instead. Low house pressure from a sticking shutoff valve gives hollow, undersized cubes. All of that is fixable without replacing the ice maker.
Cooling and control problems we test for
If water flows and the freezer is cold and still nothing drops, the trouble is inside the unit. We test the fill valve coil, the thermostat or optical sensor that decides when to harvest, and the small motor that turns the ejector. On modules with a heater that loosens cubes, a burned-out heater leaves a frozen slab every single time. When a refrigerator has a sealed-system issue, ice is often the first thing to go while the fresh food section still seems fine. We check evaporator frost patterns and defrost operation before we condemn any part. Guessing here gets expensive, so we measure instead.
Safe checks for you, and where to stop
Do these yourself: swap the filter, look at the wire arm or switch, verify freezer temp with a thermometer, unkink the supply line, and open the shutoff valve all the way. Run a few cycles after a filter change to purge air, since the first batches often come out small. Stop there. Don't pull the ice maker module, don't pry frozen parts loose with a screwdriver, and don't thaw anything with a heat gun. Leave the wiring and the water valve behind the unit alone. Could hard water alone kill my ice maker?
