What a Dirty Coil Actually Does to Your Fridge
The condenser coil dumps heat outside the cabinet. Blanket it in dust and that heat has nowhere to go. The compressor keeps running, chasing a temperature it can't reach, and run time climbs. The sealed system ends up hotter than it was built to run, and over months and years that heat cooks the compressor's internal windings along with the start components. Meanwhile your food sits at borderline temperatures and the freezer frosts up. Most homeowners hear the noise before they feel the warmth. A compressor that never shuts off isn't working hard for you. It's dying slowly.
Where the Coil Is on Your Fridge
There are two common layouts. Older units and many side-by-sides put the coil behind a snap-off grille at the bottom front, down near the floor. Others mount it on the back of the cabinet, sometimes with a fan. Look for black tubing with thin fins, a small fan, and a shallow drain pan nearby. Basic cleaning shouldn't require removing screws or panels. Pull the front grille if it clips off by hand, or roll the fridge out and look behind it. If the only way in is unscrewing a metal cover, leave it alone and call us.
The Five-Minute Habit
Unplug the fridge first. Take a vacuum with a crevice tool and pull dust off the fins going the same direction the fins run, never across them. A long soft brush or a coil brush reaches the back rows. While you're down there, wipe the floor underneath, because that dust gets pulled right back in. Check the fan blade area for hair and lint, but don't force the blade. Plug it back in and listen. Clean coils often mean a noticeably quieter fridge within the hour. That's the whole job.
How Often, and Why California Homes Need It More
Twice a year is a reasonable baseline. Pets that shed, a fridge sitting near a doorway, carpet nearby, or allergies in the house push that to every three or four months. Summer matters most. A garage or utility-room fridge in Sacramento heat is already fighting ambient temperatures near its design limit, so a dirty coil pushes it over the edge. Tie the habit to something you already do, like changing your HVAC filter or the twice-yearly clock change. Write the date on masking tape inside the grille so you stop guessing.
