1. Unplug the appliance if you can reach the cord safely. Dry hands, firm grip on the plug body, not the wire. 2. Reset the breaker once with the appliance unplugged. If it holds, the trouble is probably the appliance and not the house wiring. 3. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call an electrician. 4. Move anything else off that circuit, like space heaters, kettles, or a second fridge out in the garage. 5. Write down what was running at the moment it tripped. Heat cycle? Spin? Ice maker? That one detail saves us guessing time later.
What not to do
Don't keep resetting the breaker to squeeze out one more load. Every reset sends full current back into a fault, and that is how wire insulation cooks and a small problem turns into a burned connector. Don't swap in a bigger breaker or a heavier fuse either. That breaker is sized for the wire behind the wall, not for your laundry schedule. Running the appliance on an extension cord or power strip to reach another outlet doesn't work, since most large appliances pull far too much for that. Skip taping down a GFCI test button. And leave panels, access covers, and control housings closed.
When to shut things down and step outside
Some signs mean you stop troubleshooting entirely.
