What "two cycles" is actually telling you
A dryer doesn't soak water out of clothes. It heats air, pushes that air through the drum, and blows the wet air outside. Dry time depends on how fast that moist air gets out of the house. Block the path and heat stays in, clothes stay damp, and the machine trips its safety thermostat over and over. That's why long dry times point at the vent instead of the heating element. If your laundry room turns muggy, or the top of the dryer is hot to the touch, air is backing up instead of going out.
Cause one: lint in the vent and the lint path
Start with the cheapest suspect. Lint packs into the trap housing below the screen, into the flex hose behind the dryer, and into the wall duct all the way out to the exterior hood. Flexible foil hose crushed when somebody pushed the dryer back is a classic one. A bird nest or a stuck flapper at the outside hood will do it too. Plenty of California homes run that duct up through the attic or across a long crawl, which gives lint more places to settle. Clearing the whole run, not just the trap, brings dry times down more often than any part swap.
Cause two: heat that comes and goes
If airflow checks out, we go after heat. Electric dryers run on two legs of power. Lose one and the drum still spins and the timer still counts, but you get little or no heat, so clothes tumble damp for hours. A weak element, an open thermal fuse, or a failed cycling thermostat looks about the same from the outside. Gas dryers can have an igniter or valve coil that fires intermittently, so one load dries and the next one doesn't. All of that lives inside the cabinet. Leave it to us, especially anything on the gas side.
Cause three: sensors, drums, and blowers
Moisture sensor bars inside the drum pick up a film from fabric softener. Then the dryer calls clothes dry too early, or never calls them dry at all, and the auto cycles act strange. A worn blower wheel or a slipping belt cuts airflow even with a clean vent. Overloading matters. A king comforter or a wad of jeans won't tumble, so the outside dries while the middle stays soaked. Try splitting a heavy load in two. If half dries in normal time, the machine is fine and the load was the problem.
Safe checks you can do now, and what we do next
Pull the lint screen and hold it under running water. If water pools on top instead of passing through, scrub it with soap and a brush. Look behind the dryer for a kinked or crushed hose. Then step outside while it's running and feel the hood: steady warm air, flapper open. Clean any lint you can see at the hood, and stop there. We take it further with an amp draw reading, a temperature rise test at the outlet, and a static pressure check on the duct to prove whether the run is restricted. We also measure element and thermostat resistance and check both legs of power. Call us and tell us what you found.

Can a long vent run alone cause slow drying?
Yes. Every foot of duct and every elbow adds resistance, so long attic or crawl runs dry slower even when they're clean. We measure the restriction and can often improve it with smoother duct and fewer bends.
Is running two cycles hurting the dryer?
It can. Restricted airflow makes the machine overheat and trip its thermostat again and again, which wears out thermal parts and the element faster. Packed lint also raises fire risk. Get the airflow checked.
Why does the drum feel hot but clothes stay wet?
Hot drum with wet clothes is the signature of blocked airflow. The heat is being made, the moist air just isn't leaving. Check the vent hood and hose first, then call us for an airflow test.
