Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across California
How Often a Dryer Vent Really Needs Cleaning
If your dryer needs two cycles to finish a load, check the vent line before you blame the machine. That line runs from the back of the dryer out through your wall, and it's the culprit nine times out of ten. You clean the lint screen every load, sure. The lint that gets past it is the problem.

What a clogged vent quietly does to your dryer
Lint that slips past the screen settles inside the duct and builds up slowly, like plaque. The blower keeps pushing, but hot wet air has nowhere to go, so it sits in the drum. The dryer runs longer. The heating element or gas burner cycles more often than it was designed to. Thermal fuses and cycling thermostats sit right in that heat path, so they quit first. We see plenty of dryers where the real repair was a duct and not a part at all. Add California summer heat in a laundry closet with no ventilation and the whole cabinet cooks. Lint burns, too, which is the part nobody likes to think about.
The habit that keeps it from happening
Two minutes per load does most of the work. Pull the lint screen and clear it with your fingers, then once a month rinse it under warm water with a drop of dish soap. If water pools on the mesh instead of running through, fabric softener residue has sealed it shut. Hard water in the Sacramento Valley makes that film worse. Now look behind the dryer. The flexible duct should curve gently rather than fold flat or coil up on itself, and foil accordion hose traps lint in every ridge where smooth metal does not. Then walk outside and watch the wall or roof vent flap. It should flutter open when the dryer runs.
How often the vent line itself needs cleaning
Once a year is the baseline for a typical household. Go to every six months if the run is longer than about 15 feet, it has more than two elbows, it exits through the roof, you dry a lot of towels or pet bedding, or you run several loads a day. One or two people with a short straight duct can often stretch to 18 months. Heat pump dryers are their own case. Many are ventless, so instead of a duct you clean the lower filter and rinse the condenser coil on the maker's schedule. Skip that and drying time doubles the same way.
Signs you are already past prevention
Clothes come out hot but still damp. The laundry room feels humid or smells like scorched lint, and the dryer top is too hot to rest your hand on. A load takes two or three cycles. If the machine shuts off partway through and restarts later, a thermal switch is usually tripping on overheat. Outside, the vent flap barely moves or lint is packed around the opening. On a gas dryer, any burnt smell means stop using it and call. Those are not maintenance symptoms anymore. Something in the heat path has probably already failed, and clearing the duct by itself will not fix it.
When to call us instead of buying a brush kit
A rod-and-brush kit works fine on a short straight duct you can reach. It does not handle a roof termination, a run buried in a wall, or a duct that got crushed behind the dryer when someone pushed it back. It also can't tell you why the dryer still won't heat after the line is clear. That's our part. We check airflow, test the thermostats and fuses, look at the blower wheel for packed lint, and follow the duct path end to end. We're an independent shop working on all major brands, gas and electric and heat pump. Call us and tell us the drying time and the smell. Those two details narrow it down fast.
How Often a Dryer Vent Really Needs Cleaning — fast answers
Does cleaning the lint screen count as cleaning the vent?
No. The screen catches maybe most of the lint. The rest travels down the duct and sticks to the walls. Screen cleaning is a per-load habit, and the duct is a separate job once or twice a year.
My dryer is ventless heat pump. Do I skip all this?
You skip the duct, not the maintenance. Clean the secondary filter often and rinse the condenser coil per the manual. Clogged coils cause the same long drying times. Check the drain hose or water tank too.
Can a blocked vent break the dryer or just slow it down?
Both. Trapped heat trips thermal fuses and thermostats, and repeated overheating shortens the life of the element or burner. A lot of the no-heat calls we run trace back to a duct nobody had cleared in years.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form, then describe what you hear, smell or see. Odd noise, standing water, no heat. Have the model number handy if you can reach it.
- Step 2
We schedule a visit
Pick a window that fits your day. We confirm the address and ask a few questions first so the van carries parts that commonly fail on your machine.
- Step 3
Diagnose and repair
Our technician tests the machine, explains what failed and lays out your repair options. Many jobs finish the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule the return before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Hard water knowledgeSacramento Valley minerals scale up heating elements, valves and spray arms. We look for buildup, not just broken parts. Clearing scale and swapping clogged components keeps a dishwasher or washer from failing the same way again.
- Heat pump dryersNewer heat pump dryers dry differently, and they fail differently. Clogged condensers, blocked drains, long cycle times, all of it has a cause. We service these units and vented models too, and we tell you what the machine needs.
- Statewide coverageWe are based in North Highlands and work across California. Coastal humidity, valley heat and desert dust each stress appliances in their own way, so we factor local conditions into the diagnosis instead of guessing.
- Straight answersSome machines are worth repairing and some are not. We tell you which, based on the failed part, the age of the unit and what else is likely to go next. Then you decide.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
