What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A dryer needs air moving and something to heat that air. When the drum turns fine, the motor and belt are doing their job, so the fault sits in the heat source or in the airflow. That rules out a lot. Put your hand near the vent outside while the dryer runs. Air coming out at room temperature means the heat source isn't firing. Barely any air at all usually means a clog, and the dryer may be cutting heat on purpose to protect itself.
Start with airflow, because it is the cheapest fix
Most no-heat calls in California homes trace back to lint. A blocked vent traps heat inside the cabinet, and a safety thermal fuse cuts the heating circuit. The dryer keeps tumbling and looks fine, but it never warms up. Check the lint screen for a film of fabric softener residue. If you can reach behind the machine, pull the flexible duct off and look for packed lint. Then go outside and check the vent flap. Birds nest in those. Long runs through attics in hot Central Valley houses clog faster than short ones.
The heat parts that fail
On an electric dryer the heating element is a coil. It breaks, heat stops. On a gas dryer the igniter or the gas valve coils quit and the burner never lights. Both types also use thermal fuses and cycling thermostats that open when things overheat, and those safety parts often blow because of a clog nobody cleaned. Heat pump dryers are a different animal. They move heat instead of making it, so no heat there usually points to a sealed system, a blocked evaporator, or a full condensate pump.
Power problems on electric dryers
Electric dryers use two hot legs. One runs the motor and the drum light, the other feeds the heating element. Lose that second leg and you get exactly this symptom: everything spins, nothing heats. It happens when one half of a double breaker trips or weakens, or when the cord or outlet degrades. You can safely go to your panel, flip the dryer breaker fully off, then back on. If it heats for one load and then quits, tell us. That pattern points somewhere specific and saves diagnostic time.
What we do that you should not try at home
We pull the back panel and test the element, thermostats, and thermal fuse for continuity with a meter. On gas units we watch the igniter glow and confirm the valve opens. We measure voltage at both legs under load, and we check exhaust static pressure instead of just feeling whether air seems warm. We also clean the full duct run, since replacing a fuse without clearing the clog just burns the new fuse. Behind that panel there are live terminals, sharp edges, and gas connections. You can, but it won't dry clothes, and if a clogged vent is the cause you're running a fire risk. Unplug it or shut off the gas and stop using it until somebody looks at it.
Why did my dryer heat yesterday and not today?
Intermittent heat usually means a cycling thermostat, a weak breaker leg, or a partly blocked vent. Heat works until the machine overheats, then the safety cuts out. That pattern helps us narrow it down.
Does hard water affect a dryer?
