What "won't drain or spin" actually tells us
Draining and spinning are linked. Most washers will not spin until the water is gone, because a full drum is too heavy and off-balance. So a spin problem is often really a drain problem wearing a disguise. If you hear the pump humming but the water level stays put, something is blocking flow. If the machine is silent at the drain step, the pump or the control telling it to run may be at fault. If water leaves fine but the drum only wobbles slowly, the fault is more likely in the drive parts or the lid switch. Which one it is changes the repair completely.
Cause family one: a clog or a kinked hose
This is the cheapest and most common answer. Lint, coins, hair ties, and socks collect in the drain pump filter or the hose that runs to your standpipe. Hard water in much of California adds scale and detergent sludge to that mix, which narrows the passage over time. The drain hose behind the machine can also get crushed against the wall when the washer is pushed back after cleaning. Another version: the standpipe in the wall is partly blocked, so the washer drains slowly and backs up. Look for water rising in the pipe during the drain step. That points at the house plumbing, not the washer.
Cause family two: lid switch, door lock, or an unbalanced load
Front-load washers will not spin unless the door lock reports that it is latched. Top-loaders use a lid switch or lock. When that part wears out or its little plastic tab breaks off, the machine fills and washes but refuses to spin. It often looks like a dead motor. Loads matter too. One heavy bath mat or a comforter that bunched to one side makes the washer stop, redistribute, and give up. You will hear it try, thump, then quit. Redistribute the load by hand and start a spin-only cycle. If it works, the machine is fine and the load was the problem.
Cause family three: pump, belt, or control
Now we are into real parts. Drain pumps fail two ways: the motor dies, or the impeller cracks and spins without moving water. Older belt-driven washers can snap or stretch a belt, so the drum turns freely by hand but never under power. Direct-drive machines can lose a motor coupler or shred a clutch. On newer units the control board or the speed sensor may simply stop commanding the spin step even though every mechanical part is healthy. These jobs need panels off and meters on wires. Please leave them to us. Voltage and stored charge inside a washer cabinet are not worth the risk.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently
Safe list: unplug the washer, then check that the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe. Clean the pump filter if your model has an outside access door at the bottom front. Redistribute the load. Run a spin-only cycle. Make sure the machine is level and not walking on the floor. Stop there. When we arrive, we test the pump for continuity and actual flow, check the lid lock circuit, read stored error codes, and inspect the belt, coupler, and bearing for wear. Why does my washer drain but not spin?
Usually a lid switch or door lock that no longer reports closed, an unbalanced load, or a worn belt or motor coupler. A spin-only cycle with the load spread out tells us which direction to look.
