Age is a starting point, not a verdict
A washer's age tells us what to expect, not what to do. Machines under about eight years old usually have parts on the shelf and a frame worth keeping. Past twelve years, wear stacks up in the bearings, seals, suspension, and control board. Fix one of those on an old machine and another tends to show up later. Still, age alone doesn't decide it. We've seen fifteen-year-old top-loaders with a bad lid switch that were worth every minute of the repair, and five-year-old front-loaders with rusted-through outer tubs. What matters is what actually failed and how deep it sits in the machine.

Certain failures are routine. Drain pumps clog with coins and lint. Door locks and lid switches wear out. Inlet valves stop opening, especially in hard-water areas where mineral scale builds on the screens. Belts slip, and drain hoses kink behind the machine. Those are contained repairs on a machine that's otherwise sound. Other faults are structural. Tub bearings going out in a front-loader means splitting the cabinet. A cracked spider arm, a rusted tub, or a leaking outer tub seam usually means the machine has reached the end. This decides more repairs than people expect. Manufacturers stop making parts for older platforms. Some brands sold in small numbers here never had good parts supply to begin with. If a control board or a specific tub assembly is discontinued, the repair stops there no matter how simple it looks. So we check availability before recommending anything. If the part is common and shipping in days, that's a real repair. If it's backordered with no date, or only available used, we'll say so plainly instead of leaving you without a washer for a month.
