Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across California
Dishes Coming Out Dirty
If your dishwasher runs a full cycle and the dishes still come out gritty or filmy, start with water hardness, detergent, and the filter, then call us if that doesn't fix it. No leak, no error code, no obvious problem. Cloudy glasses that need a second wash by hand are common in much of California because of hard water, though hard water isn't the only cause. Here's how we sort it out.

What "not cleaning" actually tells us
Dirty dishes usually mean the water never got hot enough, or it never reached the dishes with any force, or it got dirty and stayed that way. The pattern matters. Chalky white haze on glassware is minerals and detergent, not a broken part. Wet food still stuck to plates points at spray pressure or spray coverage, and grit on the bottom rack after every load points at the filter or drain. Look at the dishes before you touch anything else. Snap a photo on your phone. That one detail saves a lot of guessing later.
Start with the cheap stuff: water, detergent, and loading
Sacramento Valley and much of the state runs hard water. Minerals coat the heating element, the spray arms, and your glasses, and old clumped detergent makes it worse. Powder and tabs go stale in a humid kitchen. Try fresh detergent, add a rinse aid, then run a cleaner cycle with a dishwasher-safe descaler. Now check how you load. Tall pots block the upper spray arm, nested bowls hide their own insides, and plastic lids flip over and catch water. Run the hot tap at the sink until it steams before you start a load, so the machine begins hot instead of heating cold pipes.
Next: the filter, spray arms, and drain path
Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter in the floor of the tub. Twist it out, rinse it under the tap, and scrub the mesh with an old toothbrush. People are often shocked at what comes out. While it is out, look at the sump area and pull out glass chips, seeds, and labels. Now spin each spray arm by hand. It should turn freely. Hold it up to the light and check the little holes for mineral plugs or toothpick fragments. A stiff wire clears them. Check the sink drain and disposal too, since a clogged shared line backs dirty water into the tub.
Safe checks only, and where to stop
Everything above is fine to do with the door open and the machine off, including a look at the door gasket and the detergent cup door for a stuck flap. What we ask you not to do: pull the lower access panel, unplug wiring, tap on the control board, or work behind the unit while it is still powered and connected to the water line. Heating elements, circulation pumps, and door latch switches sit behind panels for a reason. If dishes stay dirty after a clean filter, clear spray arms, fresh detergent, and hot inlet water, the problem is mechanical or electrical. Call us.
What a technician does differently
We measure instead of guessing. A thermometer tells us whether the water reaches wash temperature or whether the heating element has quit. We check fill level, because a machine that underfills sprays weakly no matter how clean the arms are. We test the circulation pump and listen for a worn impeller. We also look at the diverter valve that alternates between upper and lower arms, a common failure that leaves one rack spotless and the other filthy. The inlet valve screen gets checked for mineral scale, routine in hard-water homes. Then we tell you what failed and what it takes to fix it. We work on all major brands as an independent shop.
Dishes Coming Out Dirty — fast answers
Why are my glasses cloudy but the plates are clean?
That is almost always hard water minerals plus detergent residue, not a mechanical fault. Add a rinse aid, use fresh detergent, and descale the tub. If the haze wipes off with vinegar, it is scale.
Should I rinse dishes before loading?
Scrape, do not rinse. Many detergents need some food soil to work against. Heavy chunks, bones, and labels should come off, because those are what clog the filter and spray holes.
Can a bad water heater cause poor dishwasher cleaning?
Yes. If your household water arrives lukewarm, the dishwasher may not fully heat it during a normal cycle. Run the kitchen tap hot before starting a load and see whether results improve.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form, then describe what you hear, smell or see. Odd noise, standing water, no heat. Have the model number handy if you can reach it.
- Step 2
We schedule a visit
Pick a window that fits your day. We confirm the address and ask a few questions first so the van carries parts that commonly fail on your machine.
- Step 3
Diagnose and repair
Our technician tests the machine, explains what failed and lays out your repair options. Many jobs finish the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule the return before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Hard water knowledgeSacramento Valley minerals scale up heating elements, valves and spray arms. We look for buildup, not just broken parts. Clearing scale and swapping clogged components keeps a dishwasher or washer from failing the same way again.
- Heat pump dryersNewer heat pump dryers dry differently, and they fail differently. Clogged condensers, blocked drains, long cycle times, all of it has a cause. We service these units and vented models too, and we tell you what the machine needs.
- Statewide coverageWe are based in North Highlands and work across California. Coastal humidity, valley heat and desert dust each stress appliances in their own way, so we factor local conditions into the diagnosis instead of guessing.
- Straight answersSome machines are worth repairing and some are not. We tell you which, based on the failed part, the age of the unit and what else is likely to go next. Then you decide.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
